OASS
In January 2012 I was digging through my mutton korma in Karim's in Noida when I received a call from my Wildlife Photographer friend, Kahini Ghosh Mehta asking me if I was interested in a photography assignment that involved behind-the-scenes photography for a film on the scourge of child prostitution. Having just quit my previous job of 10 years, I was deeply intrigued, not just at getting involved with a very powerful film, but also trying out a new kind of photography that was alien to my skills as a Landscape and Urbanscape photographer. You see, I just don't feel comfortable photographing people. Its just me, I guess, and nothing to do with the subject. But here was a chance for me to get involved with something that was perhaps life-changing!
Kiku’s eyes fly open and she looks at the face on top of her. His yellow eyes streaked with red look into her but do not see her. Fumes of alcohol and sweat flow out of him and into her. The wooden bed and her bones creak under his weight. He moves to his own rhythm as she lies under him. She clamps down her screams. It is not the pain she is fighting, she no longer feels that. It is the humiliation. Kiku turns her eyes to the grey ceiling and presses her eyelids close. She squeezes them tight, urging the dark clouds to move and make way for the blue skies.
The description above taken from the film's website www.theoass.com is bone-chilling! Yet its true, and its repeated and experienced hundreds and even thousands of times everyday. As I worked through scene after disturbing scene during the making of the movie, I could only gaze on in wonderment at the power of the message being created by the Producers, the Directors, the Cast, the Crew, and I was such a small part of this. My photos, selected from over 3000 photos I captured through January, are a small way to convey the horrors of child trafficking and prostitution. These scenes, sadly, are played in reality over and over again, on a daily basis, perhaps even an hourly basis.
Shooting took place in the congested lanes of Old Delhi, various sets created through the city of Delhi, and the stunningly gorgeous and pristine Western Uttarakhand Himalayas near the garrison town of Chakrata, under sub-zero conditions. The experience WAS life-changing!
Do please view the film when it launches in your part of the world. Every viewing will mean another corrective step will be taken to get rid of this menace for good!
OASS, meaning "dew".
